Professional Support
We offer support to public philosophers by providing mentoring to early career philosophers and dossier review to members who are crafting a portfolio of public-facing work for tenure and promotion, and we offer support to institutions looking for qualified external reviewers. Public philosophy achieves significant impact while also providing rich scholarly insights. We can help you find the right language and metrics for presenting your work and help insure that public philosophy is evaluated fairly and comprehensively.
Early Career Mentoring
PPN maintains a pool of experienced public philosophers who have volunteered their time to assist early career public philosophers in developing their CVs, exploring new varieties of public philosophy, explaining the value of their work to others, and generally offering guidance and support.
Dossier review
PPN also provides assistance to public philosophers going up for tenure or promotion. Reviewers help public philosophers articulate and demonstrate the value and impact of their work to colleagues and review committees. To request a match with a qualified reviewer, please send your request to Samantha Noll, chair of PPN’s Changing the Culture of the Profession Committee, at least 90 days prior to the tenure/promotion file submission date. (We also welcome additional volunteers.)
External review
For our External Review Panel, experienced public philosophers have volunteered to respond to university requests for qualified reviewers of tenure and promotion packages. Public Philosophy is a rapidly growing and diverse field that encompasses a range of approaches including community engagement, writing for general audiences, producing podcasts and other media, teaching philosophy in schools and prisons, and collaborating outside of academia. For this reason, fair evaluations of public philosophy benefit from experience with the approach, which may be different than specific subject matter expertise. The administration of our External Review Panel is separate from our Mentoring Panel: no one performs both roles.
University T&P committees should contact reviewers listed below directly to see if they are available to perform a review. To volunteer to be added to this panel, please contact Samantha Noll.
